I'm sure 95 would be the route that mapquest would generate because it is in fact the shortest route. It's a straight shot. To do better you would have to fly.

Depending on where in the Bronx you live, you need to get to get to Penn Station or the Port Authority (on West 34 street and West 42 street, respectively). See if there's a bus that leaves from the Port Authority to Pennsylvania or if a train from Penn Station takes you to an exit near Dorney Park, then maybe you can cab it to the park.
And if you can, call the park and ask them if there is a bus that travels near their exit.
Happy Hunting!

I was born in the Bronx and still have tons of family there. My favorite experience is visiting Yankees Stadium, even if you're not a Yankees fan, there's something monumental about visiting such a historic site.

The one thing you will find out about the Bronx. It is as "real" as it gets in terms of the people.....working class mainly along with middle class families and houses. That's what actually makes the boroughs "charm".

The South Bronx may still have its rough parts but not as bad as it used to be (comparing to the ***** days of the early 90's). There are other parts that are mainly residential (in terms of homes) in nature (Castle Hill, Throgs Neck, Wakefield, Pelham Parkway area) and even one part that people in The Bronx DON'T THINK is "The Bronx" because of its affluent homes (Riverdale). And other areas that were run down are starting to get picked up (such as the area on Bruckner Blvd. in the South Bronx that has now become a haven for antiques and artists....SoBro).

You have many shops along main streets such as Fordham Road and 3rd Avenue but you also have big shopping centers (Bruckner Plaza and Bay Plaza).

Aside from Bronx Community College, you also have Fordham University, Lehman College, Manhattan College, The College of Mt. St. Vincent, Hostos Community College as well as branches of other colleges (such as the College of New Rochelle).

You do have many apartment buildings in the Bronx....ranging from rentals to (in the case of Riverdale) co-ops and condos.

There are many restaurants in the Bronx as well. The two PRIME areas are Arthur Avenue (for Italian Food - the "Little Italy") and City Island (past Pelham Bay Park - for seafood and steaks). There are also many choices for restaurants for Spanish food since the Bronx has the largest Puerto Rican population outside of Puerto Rico.

The borough, just like the rest of New York City has been a lot safer and you'll be surprised at just how "down to earth" we are up here!

Native New Yorker nailed it down, even to the stores there!

I did have family that lived at Patterson Houses (which is along East 141st Street and Third Avenue - we don't use the "3" in The Bronx) and while the city has been safer and you should encounter very little to no problems during the day, at night the neighborhood is still rough. Unless you have "street savvy" on you, it's an area I'd stay away from at night.
